Green Party condemns Israeli attacks and calls for international intervention
The Green Party has condemned today’s statement by Israel that it has no intention of stopping its attack on Lebanon. Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson John Gormley TD called for international intervention to calm the situation and end the conflict before it escalates and spreads.
“Yesterday’s statement from the G8 summit shows an almost total capitulation to Israeli interests,” he said. “While the actions of Hizbullah are of course to be condemned, it must be recognised that the Israeli response to the kidnapping of its soldiers has been totally disproportionate and in breach of international law.
“The Irish Government and the EU in particular must stop their softly softly approach in relation to Israeli attacks by immediately calling on Israel to comply fully with all UN resolutions. It is clear that the United States cannot act as an honest broker in this conflict; it is perceived in the Arab world as being staunchly pro-Israeli.
“The best way forward now is for Israel to immediately cease its attacks and for a UN special envoy to establish the safety of the Israeli prisoners. If this is not done, there is every likelihood that this conflict could spread directly to Syria and Iran, which could have very serious consequences, not just for the Middle East but for the world at large.”
