Visit of John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia

Trevor Sargent and John Gormley today sent the letter below to John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, on the occasion of his address to Dáil Éireann.

The Honourable John Howard, M.P.,
Prime Minister of Australia

23rd May 2006

Dear Prime Minister Howard,

The Green Party regrets that we were not given the opportunity to meet properly with you today. We would have liked to raise two issues with you, in particular:

(1) the refusal of the Australian Government to ratify the Kyoto Protocol

(2) the support of your Government for the war in Iraq.

The Irish Green Party and our colleagues in the Australian Greens find your position on both these issues unacceptable. Given the mounting evidence showing that Climate Change is the biggest challenge facing humanity, and the growing chaos in Iraq caused by the continued occupation, we would ask you to reconsider your position on both the Kyoto Protocol and Iraq.
Yours sincerely,

Leader of the Green Party

Chairman and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson
