Calls for independent investigation of Shannon military stop-over

The Green Party has called for an independent investigation into military stop-overs at Shannon Airport.

Speaking following revelations that Apache helicopters have been exported to Israel through Shannon, Green Party Chairman John Gormley TD said the issue raised serious questions about the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“Did Dermot Ahern or the Taoiseach have any knowledge that these state of the art killing machines, which were used to assassinate people, were exported from Shannon? This matter must be comprehensively investigated by the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Foreign Affairs. If it is established that the Department lied about this then the Minister for Foreign Affairs will have no option but to resign.

“It is bad enough that Shannon has effectively become a US military airport for the occupation of Iraq, but now that it is implicated in the suppression of the Palestinian people as well, it confirms that this Government’s foreign policy is ad idem with US foreign policy,” concluded Deputy Gormley.
