Green Party expresses sympathy on death of Dr John de Courcy Ireland

Green Party Chairman John Gormley TD today offered his condolences and those of the Green Party to the family of the late Dr. John de Courcy Ireland.
Deputy Gormley, the Party’s Foreign Affairs and Defence spokesperson, said today that, “Ireland has lost a great and inspiring figure with the death of Dr John de Courcy Ireland. John’s great devotion to the cause of peace and the anti-nuclear movement led him to be a founding member of the Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and he spoke with eloquence and passion at innumerable marches, public meeting and rallies throughout the country. He was an outspoken critic of the Iraq War.”John recognised years ago the great value of Ireland’s maritime resource and he is recognised across the world for his writings on maritime history. John, however, was greatly dismayed that the great resource the sea offered to this country was never properly understood or developed by Irish governments. He was a man of vision and I wish he could have served in Dáil Éireann, and as Minister for the Marine at some stage in his long and productive life.”
