Donation revelations show how bigger parties benefit, says the Green Party
The Green Party has said that today’s disclosure of donations by TDs, Senators and MEPs shows how the bigger parties benefit.
Green Party Chairman John Gormley TD said, “The publication of donations to politicians highlights the need for complete state funding of political parties. Indeed, this was the subject of comprehensive debate at the Green Party conference at the weekend, where it was decided that the party would continue with its policy of not accepting corporate donations.
“This, of course, puts us at a competitive disadvantage vis a vis other political parties in this country. However, this policy also ensures that it can never be said that we favour vested interests in any way.
“It should be obvious to the voter that the larger parties can spend inordinate amounts of money on advertising and publications to their advantage. The Green Party hopes that in the run-up to the election the voters will remember that we are the only party who do not accept corporate donations. This is an important policy difference which we will repeatedly highlight over the coming year.”
