Planes at Shannon must be searched
The Green Party today called on the Government to carry out full searches on planes passing through Shannon to ensure that they are not transporting terrorist suspects.
Green Party Chairman and Foreign Affairs spokesperson John Gormley TD said today that, “The latest revelations about US plane movements through Shannon airport confirm the need for searches to be carried out. All the indications are that terrorist suspects are being transported on these planes in breach of international law.
“Dermot Ahern’s statement that we accept the word of a friendly nation simply isn’t good enough. We already know that the war in Iraq was based on the huge lie that Saddam Hussein had possession of weapons of mass destruction. Since then there have been many more instances of lies and distortions by the Bush administration. How then can we trust the US government to tell us the truth about these planes?
“The Department of Foreign Affairs must now direct the Gardaí to carry out searches on any suspect planes in Shannon airports. If this is not done then our Government is complicit in this serious breach of international law,” concluded Deputy Gormley.
